If you’ve spent fall in New Mexico, you know that October means more than just Halloween. As the leaves over the Rio Grande turn to fiery reds and sunny yellows, mornings cool down and hot air balloons float over the Sandias. The beginning of fall sets the scene for one of New Mexico’s most iconic events: The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors per year, the weeks leading up to balloon fiesta feel like a whole new season. Restaurant tables fill up, families fly out, and the feisty New Mexican energy gets a little brighter. But the real fun begins once the fiesta actually starts. Every NM Local has a unique Balloon Fiesta tradition. Early risers pack breakfast burritos and chase sunrise to their favorite balloon-watching spot. Night owls stay up late to walk through mazes of glowing balloons and watch fireworks. But if you’re new to the state, just visiting, or haven’t made it to mass ascension in a few years, choosing what to see from the 9-day schedule of events, or what souvenirs to buy from the 80+ local businesses can get a little overwhelming.

At Sadie’s of New Mexico, this isn’t our first fiesta. Run by generations of NM locals, Sadie’s serves New Mexican classics to  over 15,000 balloon fiesta visitors every year, so we know a thing or two about making a visit great.

If you’re planning your visit to the balloon fiesta this year, here’s a few of our favorite events.

Dawn Patrol

This one’s for our early birds! Dawn patrol has launched the first flights of the fiesta since its inaugural performance in 1996. Before the sun rises, a choreographed group of balloons launch into the dark and fly until it’s light enough to see a safe landing site. Beside providing one of the best views of the fiesta, dawn patrol plays an integral role in ensuring successful flights for the rest of the fiesta. This launch helps other balloon teams monitor the conditions they’ll fly in for mass ascension, balloon racing, and skydiving.

Dawn patrol begins at 6:00 AM without weather or technical delays and takes place on the balloon fiesta park field. While there is parking available at the balloon fiesta park, there is a Park and ride service that begins at 4:00 AM to avoid long lines and crowded parking lots.

Mass Ascension

Mass Ascension is full-force balloon fiesta magic. On weekends and Wednesday mornings, every balloon attending the festival (Over 500!) launches together for one of the most iconic sights of the fiesta. These balloons fill the sky over the course of 2 hours. This event can be seen from almost anywhere in Albuquerque. Locals find their favorite balloon–watching spots in grocery store parking lots, parks, and even hiking trails. But everyone agrees– the best view is from the balloon fiesta park, watching as the “Zebras” (Black-and-white clad staff members directing safe launches and landings), send groups of balloons into the skies over the course of about 2 hours.

Mass ascension begins at 7:00 AM without weather or technical delays. This is the most popular event of the balloon fiesta, so expect crowds and plan to arrive early.

Balloon Glow

For our late-rising fiesta-goers, looking for Balloon Fiesta Magic, don’t worry, the balloon glow’s got you covered! This tradition began on Christmas Eve in 1979, and has become one of the most well-loved events of the Balloon Fiesta. After sunset watch hundreds of balloons glow, for one of the most memorable moments of the Balloon fiesta. Each balloon’s unique design and composition casts different colors and shapes across the field, creating a breathtaking light show.

Sometimes choreographed and set to music, special glow events include the Special Shapes Rodeo and the Twilight Twinkle Glow. Start times vary based on the day’s event schedules, though balloon glows happen most frequently at 6:30 PM on weekends.

Special Shape Rodeo

Stagecoaches, bumblebees, cats, cows, and more! The special shapes rodeo shows off the creativity and technical abilities ballooning requires– not just in flying the balloons, but creating, constructing, and maintaining them. From spiders crawling all over a typical teardrop balloon to  dinosaur, sloth, and lion shapes, there’s no shortage of sights to see.

The 2026 Special Shape Rodeo begins at 7:00 AM on Thursday, October 8th and Friday, October 9th. If you can’t make the morning work, the Special Shape ‘Glowdeo’ starts at 6:30 PM on the same Thursday and Friday, giving you an up-close and personal look at your favorite special shape balloons. Additionally, most balloon crews have pins, commemorative cards or stickers for fiesta-goers to collect.

After Glow Fireworks Shows

Mass ascension days are packed full with special events, launches, and competitions, so you know the day has to finish off strong. The balloon fiesta magic goes into the evening with the After Glow fireworks show. Once all the balloons lighting up the night with balloon glows are out of the Fiesta Park sky, a dazzling display of fireworks provides a scenic sendoff.

The Afterglow Fireworks Show starts at 8:00 PM on Mass Ascension days, including the special shapes Rodeo. After watching the balloon glow, getting some food, or visiting the merch tents, find a comfortable spot on the field and watch one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in New Mexico.

Remember: Weather delays and transportation can change schedules in an instant. For the most up-to-date information, check the official Balloon fiesta website: https://www.balloonfiesta.com/
